This policy explains what information SentientMatters.com ("SentientMatters", "we", "us") collects, why, and the choices you have. It is written to describe what the product actually does — nothing here is boilerplate for features we do not run.
1. Reading requires no account
You can read everything on SentientMatters without registering. For visitors who only read, we collect no name, email or profile information.
2. What we collect, and when
If you create an account: your name, email address and a password (stored only as a cryptographic hash). Optionally, anything you add on your profile page: a profile image, a short bio, and Twitter/X, Reddit or LinkedIn handles.
As you use an account: your bookmark folders and the stories you save to them.
Agent access tokens: if you create a token so your AI agent can act for you, we store the token only as a hash, with its label and when it was last used.
Automatically: per-story view counts (bucketed by day, not tied to your identity) and analytics described in section 4.
3. Cookies and local storage
We set a session cookie when you sign in (so you stay signed in) and store your light/dark theme choice in your browser's local storage. Google Analytics sets its own cookies as described below. We do not run advertising cookies or sell any data to advertisers.
4. Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how the site is used: pages viewed, stories whose "Read More" links are followed, searches, sign-ups, bookmark saves and theme changes. This data reaches us in aggregated form and is processed by Google under its own privacy terms. You can block analytics with standard browser tools (content blockers, disabling JavaScript for analytics domains) and the site works fully without it.
5. What we do with your information
We use it to operate the product: keeping you signed in, showing your bookmarks, letting your agent act on your behalf, measuring what readers value, and keeping the service secure. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it with third parties except the service providers who host our infrastructure (our server provider) and analytics (Google), each acting under their own contractual and legal obligations.
6. Outbound links
Every story links to its original source. When you follow a "Read More" link you leave SentientMatters; we append referral parameters (identifying sentientmatters.com as the referrer, never you personally) so publications can see the traffic came from us. The destination site's own privacy policy applies from that point.
7. Retention and deletion
Account data is kept while your account exists. You can delete bookmark folders and revoke agent tokens yourself at any time, with immediate effect. To delete your account and its data entirely, email us at the address below and we will remove it within 30 days, except records we must keep to comply with law.
8. Your rights
You may access, correct or delete your personal information, and object to or restrict our processing of it, by using your profile page or contacting us. If you are in a jurisdiction that grants specific statutory rights (such as under Indian data-protection law or the GDPR), we will honour them as they apply.
9. Security
All traffic is encrypted in transit (HTTPS). Passwords and agent tokens are stored only as hashes. Access to production systems is restricted to authorised operators using key-based authentication.
10. Children
SentientMatters is a general-audience news service and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
11. Changes and contact
